25 Interesting Prophecies and Fulfillments About The Coming of Jesus Christ

Rev Dr Howard Sands

The Old Testament includes about sixty different prophecies, with more than 300 references, of the coming of the Messiah. It was through the fulfillment of these prophecies that Israel was told she would be able to recognize the true Messiah when He came. The four gospels record several times when Jesus said that He was fulfilling a prophecy of the Old Testament. Luke 24:27 records, for example, "And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself." And verse 44 notes, "And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and the prophets and the psalms, concerning me."

Here are a few of the pertinent ones. Here are a few of the pertinent ones.

John 7:42 Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

a/ Mary was living in Nazareth at the time Jesus was about to be born. Travel was very limited, arduous, and uncommon in that time, yet Jesus had to be born in Bethlehem. Nazareth was 112 miles from Bethlehem by Roman roads. This was quite a journey on foot.

Luke 2:1-7 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

b. Getting Mary there on time:

1). "Sir William Ramsay-the noted British chemist and archaeologist, as well as Bible scholar-in 1923 discovered at Ankara, Turkey, a Roman temple inscription which stated that in the reign of Caesar Augustus there were three great tax collections."

2). The first of these taxes was when Cyrenius was governor. This was in approximately 12 BC. * Smith's Dictionary of the Bible, page 525.

3). "The second [tax] was ordered four years before the birth of Christ; the third, several years after His birth." *Lockyer page 63.

4). "The second special tax...the proud Jews resented; so they sent a commission to Rome to protest about it. ... the commission finally failed ... exactly enough delay was caused ... so that when the enrollment was put in force in Judea the exact time had come for Mary to give birth to her child." * Lockyer page 63.

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
